It is interesting to see that the increasing pressure exerted by the law on moving brokers appears to be causing a change in their rhetoric. In the last 5-10 years, moving brokers have been under more and more pressure from the courts to change their ways and stop some of their unethical practice. Today, in 2009, here is a blurb from a moving broker web site describing their “system.”
“SYSTEM:: We use the main moving system program that enables us to match up your move to one of our available trucks across the nation, so we are able to offer you great discounts for your move. There isn’t a day that goes by when there aren’t hundreds of moving trucks on the road picking up and delivering individuals, families, and business goods throughout the United States. However, there are many times that these trucks will be going to their next destination with free space. Our moving specialists will locate these trucks with free space and fit the right one to your specific moving needs.”
In a small way, this sales blurb represents progress, because most moving brokers would do this secretly, and never let the public know that they weren’t the company that would move them. But now you have to look between the lines and see what this broker is really saying.
First off, on the surface, it sounds like a great deal, and it sounds believable. Moving trucks that are already paid to go to a destination have a half empty truck doing nothing. And now, this enterprising broker has developed a computer program to rapidly locate these trucks and their moves, and arrange for his client’s belongings to be shipped in the trucks, in this space, that otherwise wouldn’t be used for anything, and thus, be shipped at a reduced rate.
What really goes on? The truth is that the other load on the half used truck is also from a move arranged by moving brokers, and that owner was also told he could pay a reduced price. So now, after the moving brokers arranging the move take their commission, the contracted movers will be receiving two reduced fees for the move. How will he survive? The answer is he will save money by using less skilled labor, less efficient equipment, sub-standard trucks, and he will find ways to raise the price of the move before he agrees to release the goods.
So what does the consumer get for this reduced rate? The consumer gets a move that will be broken into segments. His goods may be subjected to the stress of loading and loading multiple times. Not infrequently only part of a consumer’s goods can fit into one truck. His boxes will get separated and frequently lost, if the label falls off, or even stolen,
As a result of the stress of the move, when the goods finally arrive at their destination, they are often lost, or stolen, and what shows up is damaged or totally broken goods. When the goods finally arrive at the destination they are frequently damaged, stolen or totally broken. And what’s worse, because, as the broker says, they are giving a reduced rates, the contracted mover will seek ways to raise the moving price to pay for his work. So the move may end up costing double what the moving cost estimate said.
A better way to save money, and protect yourself from a moving scam, is to hire a packing company and have them load your goods onto containers, which only you can access. Packing Service Inc. is one honest packing company that is totally opposed to moving scams. They will not only give you good packing and loading help, they will also recommend an honest shipper to move your container or pod to its destination.
